The pulse - more than just a number

The arterial pulse is the most basic of clinical examination tools, forming part of the vitals. The rapid advancement of technologies and ever increasing demands for more patients to be seen within the same timeframes, has also led to the delegation of tasks to allied healthcare professionals. The pulse, along with blood pressure, is commonly assessed by an automated machine. This has led to a decline in manual palpation and may lead to the loss of such a rudimentary examination skill. The authors describe the historical origins of the role of the pulse and how to assess its rhythm and character.
